My 8 year old daughter will be sewing for the first time on her new machine. Any suggestions for an easy sewing project? We have some cute fabric to use and it would be fun to do something with it.
a small bag is always a fun easy project – there are tons of free instructions on the internet. here is a post from a while back about sewing and knitting for young ones that may have some suggestions….
Mine made a throw pillow for her bed and stuffed it. Very basic stitching. She then made a baby quilt with help from me on the layout for the Japan victims. It uses the same stitch and turn skill. She is making a doll baby blanket next, then she could cut and hem a tablecloth with matching napkins for a table. (I am trying to cut down on clutter by asking mine to do things we can actually use). The bag ideas are fun too and useful too! She could make a pin cushion too.
My kids have been sewing up a storm! They have all made a quillow — a lined blanket with a pillow attached. I’m sure you could find instructions online. My girls have made simple skirts with elastic at the waist. You can use a contrasting piece of fabric, fold in double and sew it along the bottom so they don’t need to do a typical hem — does that make sense? Pajama bottoms and shorts are also good. My 7 yo dd just made a beautiful dress with a zipper! I’m so proud of her.
I just came across Sewing School 21 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make by Amie Petronis Plumley and Andria Lisle. It suggests hand sewing first then moving up to a machine. There are easy to difficult projects. They all look like fun! I got my copy from the library.
