My 9yo ds is using the grade level 1-3 booklist from Mod. 6 (I didn’t think he was quite ready for the 4-6th booklist, but I could’ve been wrong).  We only have a few books left in the Module and we have many months left of the school year and I’m at a loss as to what to do for him.  I’ll mention the ideas I do have and maybe someone can add to them.

*I have an older boy that may not finish his list so I was going to use 1-2 books of his for a read aloud.

*I have other books for his time period that I could add, although they may be out of order, but I think that may be okay.

*Stop for a bit (we are during the holiday season anyway) and let him do some crafts/recipes pertaining to the time period.

    *Do a simple lapbook/diorama.

I do add in some simple stories throughout the months that are out of our time period like: Veteran’s Day, Martin Luther, etc., so we’ll take a little bit of time for those as well.  I don’t want to start too much and then not be finished when I want to be, but I don’t want him to not have some readers to finish out the year.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

I think all your ideas are good:) We’re doing Mod. 6 and my 9yo is reading a combo of years 1-3 and 4-6 (he’s a pretty strong reader).  It’s working well.  He read Abe Lincoln: Log Cabin to White House, and will read Skylark, Sarah Plain and Tall and Caddie Woodlawn.  I read Abe Lincoln’s World as one of our spines to him and my oldest(certain sections, not all).  I’m not a crafty person, so take that in mind, but if it were me I’d just add on 1-2 of the older books that you think he could handle and if time some of the crafty stuff and I think it would be fine:)  HTH some.  Blessings, Gina

Good idea, Gina.  I should’ve done that in the first place, but didn’t realize we’d get through them so easily (that’s probably an indication that he’s a strong reader, which I already knew).  Both of my boys could’ve used a combo of the two Modules and been fine.  I did think of that but let time pass and now here we are, ta da!

It doesn’t usually matter to me that books are a bit out of order, once they have the time period figured out, but for some reason I feel a bit odd about that this time around.  Remind me it will all be okay, especially when they use a BOC, and that it’s all good, please.

    Thanks again.

I wouldn’t worry about it.  He’s done the whole younger list and the BOC will help.  And he’ll get it all again later.  I’d bet he’s getting way more history than most school kids.  My friend saw a neighbors 4th grade history/social studies textbook and it only had one paragraph about George Washington and lots of info. on what bus drivers, etc. did.  She was not impressed, and she’s a pretty laid back homeschooler….and this is a good school district:)  I wouldn’t sweat it.  Blessings, Gina

Thanks Gina.  Yes, I’m sure it will all be fine….I may even let him make some choices and he’ll enjoy that.  Plus, I think that he even recognized that the books were a bit “young” for him (although he loved them, he loves all books and feels so bad to even say he doesn’t like something) and will enjoy something a bit more “mature”.

I agree with the whole elementary textbooks…we hated them even when we weren’t CM.  Soooo boring and not much info to make any child, let alone adult, care about who any of those people were.  My kids feel like they really “know” people from the past, they refer to them by name all the time, LOL.

Anyway, thanks again. I feel I have a plan for the rest of the year.
