I’ll have a high schooler next year, and I’ve been wondering if we should add a bit more to composer and artist studies.  So far we’ve just focused on appreciation, but it seems like we should cover different art/music periods at some point.  Do you have any good recommendations for how to cover this?

Also, we read through short biographies of composers out of an old Childcraft encyclopedia, but I’ve yet to find a similar book for artist study.  Are there any good resources that you’ve found?  I prefer to keep these biographies short…adding a full chapter book is too difficult for me to schedule in on top of everything else.  A book with a chapter per artist would be perfect.  I also don’t want to add a biography that is full of dry facts.

In the high school years you could add some closer analysis of style.

Ideally, the student could put together a history of art or music at this point by looking through his/her book of centuries and recalling each artist and composer entered and thinking through their various styles. You could supplement that with the commonly used labels for the various periods.

One possible resource for artist bios is Knights of Art by Amy Steedman. It covers only the Italian painters, but at least it’s a place to start.

Oh, and take a look at Pictures Every Child Should Know by Dolores Bacon. It has some short bio material in it too.
