I’m new to CM and just received some new curriculum I ordered from Simply Charlotte Mason. Looking through the books it looks like I need a lot more than I thought. I have found a few on different sites and the library, but in particular the recommended reading list from Visits to Europe books I can’t find anywhere except on Amazon and they are so expensive. Any ideas?
I have never sold books. I tend to be on the “collecting” end right now. I know that we will use again as the kids get older and they often reach for books we have read for school in their free time (especially the Visits To… book selections)
Can you get the books through inter-library loan? Another possibility would be to find similar books on the countries you are studying. I’m switching out a couple of books from Visits to Europe with books we already have. I can sometimes find them used on Amazon for a bit less than new prices.
I buy used on Amazon or betterworldbooks, where I can get 6 for $15, free shipping on the ones with a “SALE” tag. I buy new books on Amazon, CBD, Rainbow Resource, and libraryanded.com (wholesale).
I’m the same way Sandy! It’s taken me years to realize that there is nothing special with the assigned books (aside from being good, living books). As long as they are replaced with another living book, it really will be okay. 😉 I’ve even gotten to the point where we *gasp* skipped a book or two!
I am the queen of Interlibrary Loans at my local library. I have ordered the books to supplement SCM curriculum before, but I prefer to borrow them with ILL so that I don’t overwhelm our bookcases. 😉
That is nice your ILL works so well. Ours is not that great. Sometimes you only get the book for 2 days (if in demand and depending on where it comes from), the longest is a 2 week loan. And if late the fees are really high. One book I borrowed through ILL only gave me 2 days and if late a $12/day late fee. More common is $1-2/day late fee.
Onto libraries: Our family borrows so many books from ILL and our local library that they give us a bill amnesty at the start of every school year. Also, our local library gets to count the ILL loan books on their circulation record and they have chosen to give us this grace. Maybe a topic of conversation with your favorite librarian?
Also, my mother used to buy school supplies for my kids when they went to public school and now she gives each child a curriculum allotment. Did I tell you she’s a retired kindergarten teacher and she’s now one of my biggest cheerleaders for homeschooling! Also, for my upcoming birthday she is buying me a treasure that been on my “book list” for 6 months! Martha

Oh my goodness, that is almost not even worth it!
Our library gets us the books for three weeks and late fees are $1/day. I agree with what Martha said, this should be a topic of conversation with your librarian.
Wow! We have 10 cent/day late fees (although with up to 70+ books checked out, it can still really add up)! I think movies & video games are $1/day. Our ILL is just like a regular library book (4 weeks, plus 2 possible renewals, so up to 12 weeks total, unless there is a hold). New books are a 2 week check-out.
Really the only books I can’t find are Christian, and they even have some of those. I also prefer to buy books that we’ll be using more than a month or so.
I am now even more grateful for our library system!
