I’ve been eyeballing for years. I’ve tried a couple products (mostly LA) which I admit, weren’t a big hit. Other products I’ve drooled over but have never been able to afford (here’s looking at you LTDR). And I’ve scoured and scoured the curriculum guide. We have somewhat loosely followed the guide with our own materials, however, my son is half way through grade 4 and we have not once touched geography, history, Bible (outside of reading Bible stories and praying) or science in any sort of formal way, just because I’ve always felt overwhelmed by having to have four different things.
But… I want to get started on those things. And I need to be able to do them in a way that is short and sweet, just because of the way things are with our children etc… And I also need something planned out and open and go.
It finally dawned on me that SCM fits that bill exactly. So, we’re going to start after Christmas with Genesis to Deuteronomy, as well as the SCM Learning about Birds guide. For now we’ll use our own resources for poetry, music, picture, hymn studies etc… but I’m hoping next year to use the SCM guides.
I’m hoping to have our schedule go something like this:
Morning Basket (at breakfast):
– Memory Work
– Rotating Studies (picture study, hymn study, French, virtues, music study)
– Poetry
– Rosary/Prayers
Lesson Time:
– Math
– LA
– SCM History
– SCM Science (we’re going to use the bird guide 3-4x a week, and finish it by end of the year)
Sounds great! LDTR for Children really is a bargain when you consider how many years of lessons you will get from it. If you add the bird study, I highly recommend getting a bird feeder set up wherr you can observe birds regularly, as well as a bird guide. We’ve had so much fun with this!
I think most moms here pick and choose from the SCM resources. I’ve yet to try their art, poetry, or music studies. I’m hoping to add some in next year, but finding you own resources works just as well. It just takes a bit more planning on your part.
I am writing because I saw you responded to my post in March about mfw history vs. Scm. I am wondering if you are following SCM and if you would be willing to answer some questions about both curriculums?
My email is foreternity3 at gmail dot com
Thanks
