My dd9 is in 4th grade and has always understood math concepts well, but has really struggled to learn her facts. We’re still on addition at this point. However, for the past month we’ve been using a program called Rapid Recall that is very simple really, but it’s working! It’s really working! Yippee!!! You can see it here.

We focus on 5 facts at a time for 5 days each. There are 5 short (2 minutes or less) sessions per day on that week’s facts. Each session should be at least 10 minutes from another (except the listening/writing & drill, we do those at the same time).

    Sessions include:

    • Two visual input sessions (flashcards shown 3 times during each session – twice with uncovered answers and once w/ covered answers)
    • One auditory input session (listening ONLY to the facts on cd for 2 minutes)
    • One listening/writing session (listen to the problems w/ answers while locating it on the sheet  and filling in the answer)
    • One drill sheet (not timed, but go as quickly as possible)

I opted to buy the cd-rom w/ the flash sessions on the computer and it is totally self-directed. I check the 2 written pages and that’s it.

The program was pricey, but SOOOO worth it for us. Nothing else has really worked to make them stick for her and this is doing the trick. We’ve a ways to go to finish the addition, but then we’re moving on to subtraction and multiplication and she’s no longer hating math or feeling stupid when it comes to the facts.

Oh, I put the sheets in page protectors so we can use with future kids, if need be.

    Just wanted to share.

    Blessings,

Thanks Christie!  This looks really great.  My 7yo is good in math so far but has trouble remembering the simplest addition facts.  We use Math on the Level, which is wonderful, but he still has trouble with facts.  My 6yo Chinese son could really benefit from this as well, especially starting with it from almost the beginning.  I’m going to look further into it.
