Do any of you do this? I am seriously thinking about trying it. Any advice or experience with the idea would be appreciated 🙂

Here is a blog post that got me seriously thinking about doing it:

I have not – but I want to!!  I have a filing cabinet right here in our schoolroom, and I always think to myself, “Surely I could use that to get organized somehow,”  but then I don’t.  You have given me some inspiration – thanks!

Oh, wow…..  I am truly inspired.  This would help me SO much!  I think I am going to start this for next year (since this year’s stuff is about as organized as it’s going to get LOL).

I think it looks pretty cool – but it seems easier for a work-sheet method, instead of CM…. most of my resources are books or ebooks.  I also don’t see skipping things because someone is sick.  (I’ll skip math stuff if my kids don’t need the review…. but otherwise… um… no.  Same with the handwriting – I’m not going to skip a letter because we got behind….)   So – I would find that I’d have to be adjusting things afterall.

I’m quite happy having our math setup into a workbook for my kids, with my lesson plans on the Kindle – and a nice little sheet printed off SCM Organizer with our list of things to do (readings etc)…

It does look like a system that could work well for a lot of people though.

That is one thing I am skeptical about…..is it more important to finish a math book or take your time and really “get it down pat”. I don’t think I could (in good conscience) skip some things.

I am also trying to figure out what to do about lingering in one area of say…history. What if we want to spend 3 weeks on something that is scheduled for only one week. I guess I would have to shift everything back a folder….and that would defeat the whole purpose, right?

Anyway, this is why I posted this here. I wanted some opinions. I am trying to figure out a way to use all the great things we have on our shelves and never get around to doing. I need organization, but am not sure how to do it.

I think it would work here – here’s how.

I have a checklist for all the kids in their own binders.  A book to be read will be broken into divisions with checkboxes before each divsion (chapter, whatever).  Then I break all of that down into 36 sections for 36 weeks.  I highlight every second section with light gray so it’s easy for them to see what chapters belong to each week.

I then have a weekly schedule for what to do on each day.  I don’t keep making a new schedule, because it stays pretty much the same all the time.  So if it’s Monday, Canadian History day, they just go to their Canadian History book checklist and see what’s up to read today.  If we get behind it’s not a huge deal because they are still just going to the next thing on the list.  We don’t skip anything.

I would just put any sheets that are going along with the corresponding weeks into the file folders so they are all organized.  I would just put them ahead into the next week’s folder if we get behind, and catch up on a “week off”.

We rarely get behind because the kids have their own lists to follow.  I am the only one who holds things up if MY stuff isn’t organized – so the filing cabinet system would work great for us.  I would just put in our foreign language sheets, coloring pages for the small ones, maps, notebook pages (things like Considering God’s Creation, etc) – anything that we photocopy instead of them having their own book.

I think you are right, Gaeleen. I do think I am going to have to tweak the system to work for me, but I do think it can work well. It would be like taking the SCM Planning system and physically putting the plan in a box instead of it just being on paper.

You do the same thing when planning the SCM way….take the number of chapters or lessons and divide it up into weeks, etc.

I am thinking for history, picture study, nature study, projects, and things like that…..it would be very helpful.
