What are the best? We have checked out these at the library for insects and birds. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1582381291/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance

My kids are using these all the time so I wanted to buy some online. However, I got on Amazon and there are so many to choose from that I am now confused! 😉 Opinions please:)

I really like the National Audubon Society Regional guides. They have everything (trees, flowers, mammals, birds, insects, and more) in one guide for just your region. The regions are divided up like New England, Mid-Atlantic States, Southeastern States, Southwestern States, and so on. That’s just our favorite. I’m sure others have favorites, too.

It’s very frustrating for children to try to sort through huge numbers of pictures, many of which might only be found in, say, Florida, if you aren’t IN Florida.  I don’t know where you are, but we like best the ones for our state.  There are many out there for different states, and I recommend going with those first.  That way your kids won’t decide they’ve seen something, only to figure out that that probably wasn’t what it was.  I have books specific to my state for birds and butterflies, and specific to my region for grasses, wildflowers, reptiles, etc.

We like A Golden Guide From St. Martin’s Press.  We have several of them and really like them for the younger children.
