Few words, calm spirit

I have been reading and declaring a few verses about one’s spirit man every day in addition to the healing verses mentioned in another thread, and today, Proverbs 17:27 came in handy. It reads: “He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.”

My son had a very tough meltdown this afternoon (I believe he had eaten too much fruit at one time, and it backfired on him behaviorally), and in the midst of it he was very difficult to control. I knew my natural inclination would be to just keep telling him to stop or calm down or don’t do “x” all while raising my voice, so instead I kept saying “Few words, calm spirit” just at random. It didn’t really seem like he was paying attention to it, although a couple of times he sort of looked puzzled. At any rate, after a little while he sat down quietly, and nobody’s “stuff” got destroyed this time.

Afterward, I kept picturing myself looking like a parrot on a perch, repeating “few words, calm spirit; few words, calm spirit” and it actually made me chuckle.

If it works then wonderful and sometimes the words from our precious Bible have answers we cannot imagine – we just need to have the eyes to see and the ears to hear…..I am glad and happy for you. Linda

Well, the whole scenario reminded me of an interview I heard several years ago on a Christian radio program. The woman author they were interviewing was recounting an incident where she had been car-jacked, and the man ordered her to drive to a certain place. On the way, she recalled having read Psalm 91 earlier in the day, especially verse 4, which reads: “He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” In the stress of the moment, she couldn’t remember the exact words, so she just started repeating, “feathers, feathers, feathers” out loud. The guy thought she was nuts, and although I don’t recall exactly how things ended, I do know she was not hurt.

I think that is why, in hindsight, the “stressful moments” I had today made me chuckle.

That is awesome! Different but similiar…. last week during labor all I kept saying was, “I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me” and “You are my strength when I am weak”. It would help me to remember to breathe and not get tense. It was amazing 🙂 The first several hours of labor went smoother than any other. I believe it is all because of God’s grace and mercy and His WORD!!
