This is our third year homeschooling, and our first year CM. And really the first year that I actually spent anything significant on curriculum. We had it all going on in the Fall, I tell you. Loved it! We kept up on the schedule, everything was going according to the plan.
Well, this last month has been hard, motivationally. We live in Southern Nevada and the weather is very nice right now, and it’s hard for me to get excited about sitting and doing our schoolwork. I’ve slacked off on science and electives, and I haven’t spent too much energy on math.
Is this normal for this time of year? If so, what do you do to stay motivated so that you can achieve your goals?
I feel like playing outside, cooking, cleaning and reorganizing, and sewing. Should we just take some time off and work harder in the summer (when it’s 115 degrees outside anyway)? Or should I try harder?
We do a 3 week on/1 week off for some of the reasons you stated. I feel the need to do some housework, reorganizing, reevaluating, book browsing, etc., that I don’t usually allow myself during our school weeks. This schedule is working for us right now, although, I may revamp this as well but not sure to what since we also like a longer summer break than we can afford right now.
I say give yourself a break, maybe a week or so, to do those things you want to and then get back to work when you feel ready for that routine again. A week is enough for us during the school year and a full month is really enough in the summer, but like I mentioned, I may tweak that again, not sure.
Totally normal! We get that way a bit later here when spring hits in Ohio. Take some time off completely or cut down to basics and get those done in a short time each morning.
Yup! It’s normal, i’ve been having a hard time being motivated as well. I’m hoping we can press our way through until the end of the month and take our springbreak then.
We ALWAYS take the first few days of nice weather off! The public kids get snow days – we get “beautiful weather days”!! We school year round, so in the dog days of summer, when they all complain “It’s too hot to go outside” we do school then. 🙂 Then I can take spring days off guilt free!
This is the only life we get ladies! These are the only years of childhood that our children get! Life is so short and precious we can’t ever not take the time to smell the flowers, listen to their silly stories and whatnots, take long park days, curl up with books or legos or whatever!
Ha! Ha! Can anyone tell that I spent a couple of hours today in a park overlooking the Missippi River with the sun shinning down and the kids chattering and playing? I praised God and gave thanks a thousand times during those hours!! And I didn’t regret not doing school lessons for one second of it.
I have felt the same way lately so last week we only did math and watched videos that I have been wanting us to watch but never have time for. I also took a “cleaning day” and we cleaned and organized what was bothering me the most so I could have peace of mind. Now it is back to the grindstone so that we can have a longer summer break!
