I do TV from time to time with sickness and/or planning. It’s usually good shows, even educational sometimes. Enjoy getting planning done. Your kids won’t be scarred. 🙂
FYI, mt kids love Andy Griffith. If you do Netflix instant all the episodes are on there.
As my little girls watch Netflix while mommy makes DIY princess canopies and tutu bed skirts For their room I feel something less like guilt and more like I finally accomplished something lol
Summer vacation means being a little lax on the screen rules around here. Especially when it’s high 90’s and we are inside in the AC. That’s why we do half a term in the middle of summer so all their little brain cells aren’t toasted by September lol! Plenty of good stuff on Netflix. This is a fun time to watch the movies of some of those great books we just read this year and refresh our memories. We just watch the Robin Hood from 1938 and it was a big hit and had everybody screeching “that’s Will Scarlet! Theres Much the Miller!”
For a couple of years I would pack up the info I had to go through, pack the kids up, take them to the Y, put them in babysitting for an hour or so, and sit in the lobby and work things out. (No computer though….) But…. now the babysitting is too expensive for 4 kids – and my son gets bored in the babysitting anyway as they mostly watch little kids.
Use the TV time to teach. Depending on the ages of your kids you can do phonics shows (LeapFrog, Between the Lions, etc) or science and history movies. Think Jeff Corwin, How the States Got Their Shapes, Wild Kratts, Beakman’s World….the list can go on and on. We’ve recently started watching Wild China on Netflix. It is beautifully done and we’re learning so much, and folding laundry!
There have been several threads listing our favorite ‘educational’ shows. Search through those and relax knowing that you’re planning for next year AND teaching at the same time!
Been doing that more here since early spring. We have Netflix, so it’s either older, shows or educational. I still feel bad about it but it’s not like this all the time. Just use it as a temporary opportunity.
I was wondering about WIld China; I put it on my instant queau. I found a whole bunch the other day to order, too. We need to start a “what’s new on streaming lately” thread to make sure people know what’s on so we won’t miss good stuff.
Rachel – we’ve only watched 2 episodes of Wild China. So far nothing questionable. Lovely cinematography, fabulous information. My kids all enjoy it. We watch about half an episode each week.
We love Wild China too. We have been to China 3 times (oldest son twice and whole family on this last trip, DH and I 3 times). We have seen 4 provinces and Hong Kong.
I {heart} China. It is truly a breathtaking place in so many ways. I wish we still had netflix but we cut it when doing some budget cutting.
To the OP, guilty here too. I need to get done with planning, but I have 5 different ages and levels (13YO DS; 12YO DS (but reading on a 2nd grade level and still learning English truly; 9YO DS, 7YO DS (learning delays; still trying to figure all out) and 6YO DD (seems to really get some things and still struggles).
And then 2YO DD who keeps me on my toes at all times. Oh my goodness.
Just got finished pricing books and stuff for a used curric. sale in the area. Hoping to net about $200 (so I can finish buying our books for SCM module 5; CANNOT WAIT to start this!).
Mine watch educational programs well when the TV is on. Considering how much trash TV there on regular channels, they are not allowed to watch anything not already approved…Qubo, Smile of a Child, PBS, etc.
If not watching TV, they are playing on the Wii Fit or Wii Sports. It does help me get things done around the house LOL
Yes I am guilty also. Though having older siblings helps to not do it all the time. But I am trying to do my planning and do it from K-8th so that I don’t have to do this every year. I want to finish this so that the only thing I need to do after it (which exceptions here and there) is to then start working on high school planning as not the coming year but the next my son will start and I don’t want to be sitting like a fool come next spring. TV all in moderation.
They love Curious George and Wild Kratts. The old TV stations give good ones like Daniel Boone and the such. We even watch family fued and try to beat each other though not the new ones as they are really inappropriate. You are not alone!
