Love, love, LOVE Get Smart Grammar! Best money I’ve spent. We did it this year with an 11th, 9th and 8th grader. But, the beginning lessons woul be ok but it may get too challenging for a 5th grader quickly. If I had to do it all over, I wouldn’t have tried (in vain), to do too much formal grammar earlier on. Start out slow by using their copy work and narrations to find teachable grammar moments.
I tried it with a 4th grader this year. I like it a lot, and she seemed to understand it initially much better than the grammar she’d had previously, but she got bogged down pretty quickly. We stopped after lesson 14. I’d planned to split it between this year and next, but I’m going to wait until 6th grade to start it up again. I think with a kid who understands grammar a little better, you could easily split it between 5th and 6th grade.
We are using it and LOVING it. My boys are both 12, grades 6 and 7. We are going slowly, though. The youngest was adopted from China at age 6 and struggles in some areas. He’s really catching on now so we will pick up the pace as he’s able. I’m in no hurry. It was actually for him that I chose this program. He’s always put his words together in really unusual ways so I’m hoping diagramming will help him organize his phrases better.
If your 5th grader is ready, I’d say go for it. If not, it’s fine to wait, even until high school in my opinion.
