I’d like to get some feedback on my 8.5 YO DD’s narrations as I’m not sure how to tell if she’s doing them properly and including enough information.  If they’re not detailed enough or she’s leaving information out how do I help her include the right information?  She’ll be year 3 this fall.

This was after reading to herself the story of Moses and the burning bush in her Bible:

“God told Moses to go to Egypt and to tell the people about God and ask to go on a journey to the wilderness.  And He told him what to tell them: ‘I AM the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.'”

After reading the story of the colony of New Hampshire in This Country of Ours (she read it to herself):

“They had a new colony and it was called the founding of New Hampshire and they had weird rules like a woman could not kiss her child on Saturday or any fasting day.  That colony was joined to another colony…I think it was Massachusetts.”

I think they are fine for 8yo. Remember that there really is no right information. Narration is about the child doing the work. It is how they process the info. They may not get the same thing out of it that you do.

It sounds a lot like my ds 8 yr olds.. Except she doesn’t have all the “then”s in it that he likes to include. I am trying to get him to stop the then ….. and then ….. and then …… Ugh!

I’m not sure if this is wrong, but I tend to help pull more out from my 9 y/o.  I will ask things like, “And then what happened?”or “Why did that happen?”  The more she narrates like this, and me pulling more from her, over time, she has improved and given me longer narrations with more details.  With that said, I think what your daughter is giving is an average narration for this age.
