If you were to pick an author that you would want to read/own all of their books, who would it be? Pick one for your personal reading, and one you would pick to read with your kids. Why did you choose them?
Oh C.S Lewis, can you go wrong with that answer?!? I mean between Cheonicles of Narnia and all his various Christian growth books you would learn something new everytime you retread them.
I, too, love Wendell Berry. His essays are excellent examples of clear and eloquent writing, whether you agree with his opinions or not, and could be very useful in writing instruction, IMHO. I own several of his essay books, much of his poetry, and I especially love his poetry book Sabbaths. I’ve heard good things about his fiction but I haven’t read any yet.
For Christian writers for adults, I would choose A.W. Tozer and Elisabeth Elliot, with Francis Schaeffer and his wife, Edith, in there, too. A.W. Tozer is simply passionate and unapologetic about his faith (or “was,” I should say) and I appreciate how that comes across in his writing. E. Elliot for the same reason, and for her graciousness and wisdom. The Schaeffers had a unique perspective on the creative, artistic, cultural side of the Christian faith that I haven’t read in the same way from anyone else. Edith S’s Hidden Art of Homemaking is, IMHO, the best book a woman could read about how to establish and maintain a gracious, artistic home.
For children…..it’s impossible to choose just one! I am very fond of books by Lois Lenski, Elizabeth Enright, Robert McCloskey, Mary Norton, Sterling North, Arthur Ransome, Walter Brooks…..so many!
I have all of Francine Rivers books, so she’d be my personal pick. 😉 I find her books enjoyable to read, but they also have a great illustration of our relationship with our Lord.
For children’s books, I’d probably go with CS Lewis…although he has some great books for adults as well, so he could go with either age group.
For picture books, I also love Robert McCloskey books! I’m not sure if we have all of them, but I’d say we have most of them anyway.
My favorite adult author is Louis L’Amour. I own almost every single book he ever wrote. In TJed his books are considered classics. There is such deep points to ponder when reading his books.
I also like Lauraine Snelling and Francine Rivers.
Kids authors I would go with Thornton Burgess, and G.A. Henty.
