I am looking forward to starting one of the SCM science handbooks this spring – I am looking for advice on which to choose – I will have a 5,8 and 10 year olds. We are still new to narration and I’m really looking for the one that will be the most engaging! Which one was your favorite and why?
We loved Outdoor Secrets and companion books/guide for then 8 yo and 5 yo. I really liked using the picture books and nature study. We did it in spring and summer so we could get outside and see many of the things we were studying.
My son did Jack’s Insects on his own at age 11. It is best for age 10 and up. He had read Alice in Wonderland on his own shortly before this and said Jack’s Insects was like a weird Alice story. He enjoyed the companion non-fiction go-along books better. And he liked doing insects for nature study. We did not use much of the notebooking. He is not much for writing, so I had him choose one page to write on every two or three lessons. We liked looking at the video and picture links of some insects from the guide. The chapters are not very uniform – some short and some long. I made my own lesson plans to make the readings more even and when he should read the go-along books.
Thank you so much for the info on Jack’s insects…it was so helpful because it helped me rule it out for us for now… We are looking for fun and gentle and outside time…sounds like we will save Jack’s for when we’re a bit older.
Thanks again!
