Our family is extremely blessed to be able to travel to Europe with Hubby’s job this summer. We are currently studying Egypt, but I think I’d like to take a break for a month or so before we leave to learn about Rome and Greece. Please share your favorite books, sites, movies! We’ll likely visit The Parthenon and the National Museum in Athens and the Sistine Chapel and Colliseum in Rome….so anything including these would be extra helpful:) I’ve got most of the SCM Module 2 books, so favorites of those would be great, too! Thanks for any suggestions:) Blessings, Gina
Gina – I just read a great picture book called Michelangelo by Diane Stanley (you will need to preview for some nudity). It was very interesting – I learned a lot. The pictures are superb and you will be able to remember some of the stories behind the sculptures and paintings in the Sistine Chapel when you go! That would be so cool – I am so glad that you have this opportunity! =)
I edited to add some videos but it took me too long. =/ Another thought I had was about the Famous Men books – you could read the stories of the specific places and events where you are going. Then you would have a better time appreciating what you are looking at. 😉
There are free videos about Alexander the Great, the Parthenon, the Battle of Marathon, Thermopylea, Troy, Ancient Greek art, etc. that I can post for Greece, if you are interested. Most are about 24 minutes or so.
Alexander the Great – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhNO-dJNhWQ (2 hours, 13 minutes) National Geographic – just listened to part of this, and checked the video. WE WILL ALL NEED TO PREIVEW THIS ONE!!!
When you are on any of these screens, it will bring up other suggestions on the right hand side. You might be able to be specific in a search and find cool stuff too. 😉
There are also the Drive Thru History videos. There are some episodes on Greece and some on Rome. There is a link to watch free online, or you can purchase at CBD or libraryanded.com
Rick Steve’s Europe or other travel shows may be helpful. Check PBS or Netflix or library.
I’m not sure the age of your children, but my youngsters liked the Usborne Time Traveler with Egypt, Rome, Vikings and Medieval Times. It may be at your library.
There are also some Dover historical coloring books on ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. These have interesting historical writing about the picture on each page. They are very detailed pictures.
Sarah, thanks for the Drive-Thru History reminder!! And the other suggestions, too. Honestly, my energy has been taken up w/finding pet care/house sitters for our extended trip I just haven’t had a chance to sit down and figure out educational resources yet.
Thanks to you all for helping me narrow choices and make my job easier:) Blessings, Gina
