I am planning my co op class for 1/2 graders. It is a States and Stories class, so I am compiling a list of good books to read aloud in a classroom setting that represent various areas of the U.S. If you have any good titles, please let me know what they are.

Where’d you learn that . com has state studies with book recommendations.
Also, I like, “Indiana By the Way” by, Joy Budensiek.

I came across a school librarian list a while ago of one good children’s book per state, but I cannot for the life of me find the web site right now! I have a hardcopy of the list in front of me, which includes a suggested grade level range for each book, so here are the books whose range includes 1st or 2nd grade:
- Alaska = “Akiak: A Tale from the Ideterod” by Robert J. Blake (1-5)
- Arizona = “Big Moon Tortilla” by Joy Cowley, ill. by Dyanne Strongbow (K-3)
- Iowa = “Kate Shelley: Bound for Legend” by Robert D. San Souce, ill. by Max Ginsburg (2-4)
- Kentucky = “Come a Tide” by George Ella Lyon, ill. by Stephen Gammell (K-4)
- Michigan = “The Log Cabin Quilt” by Ellen Howard, ill. by Ronald Himler (1-8)
We are reading through different books on the list as we road trip to different states, and they are all very different styles and time periods, but have each been good. The only book of those listed about we have read is the Iowa book, which is a very inspiring true story!
