I am attempting to put together a one-year world history year for my (next year) 11th grader. For those who have used the modules in the 10th-11 grade sections, can you give me your best picks?
I know for us, in either Module 5 or 6, my oldest dd loved 7 Men Who Rule the World From the Grave, and the books on Hitler and Stalin.
I’m not looking for American History suggestions in this list, only world history please. I also realize that this is really pulling apart the modules, and I would probably have to do separate Bible studies because it will be zooming through history, but I would still really like to use the SCM book suggestions if I can make this happen.
Some of my older ones’ favorites in absolutely no particular order:
Ben Hur The Golden Goblet The Eagle of the Ninth (and the two others in that series) G.A. Henty’s Books for this time period – For the Temple, Beric the Briton, etc. Beyond the Desert Gate The Bronze Bow Gilgamesh Adam and His Kin Black Sails Before Troy or the original The Odyssey Plutarch is a do not miss! Augustus Caesar’s World would be very helpful, too.
Thanks for the bump and the suggestions, ladies! I’m still hopeful that I can make this mish-mosh happen to pull together a great one-year high school world history using SCM module suggestions! Keep the suggestions, comin’!
Here are some spines that I have jotted down as possible books for doing a high school World History in one year. I would do two modules per term (approximately 6 weeks per module). Still don’t know if this idea is going to work, as I’m aware that many of the books are for a short time period in history where I would need “sweeping” time frame books for spines. But I’ve still got a few months to mull this over. Here’s what I’m thinking are possible books:
Consistently reading through the year: Material World, Hungry Planet, Visits to…, Discovering Doctrine and Jashub’s Journal.
Some of these I would consider spines, others just literature for that time period.
Module 1: Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors
Unwrapping the Pharoahs
Herein is Love: Leviticus and Exodus ?
Cat of Bubastes
Uarda
Module 2: Story of the Greeks
The Odyssey
Plutarch Greek Lives
Trial and Death of Socrates
Module 3: The Story of the Romans
Augustus Caesar’s World
Ben Hur
Module 4: Famous Men of Middle Ages or of Renaissance
Second Mrs. Giaconda
The King’s Fifth
Module 5: (we did Module 5 not too long ago so not much here)
Module 6: (did most of Module 6 last year but maybe America: The Last Best Hope Volumes 2 & 3). Probably need a good spine to go over the wars and happenings since 1950 or so. Just got for free James Stobaugh’s American History so maybe his World History? Not as massive as Notgrass’s two books.
Another possible addition: Susan Wise Bauer’s high school world history books? I think there are three of them (Ancient History, Renaissance and Medieval)
Do these sound like good spines for a world history in one year?
