My original plan for this year was to use MFW ECC. Although I’ve not completely ruled it out, for financial reasons I am looking for alternate resources to put together my own Geography focused year. I will have 4th and 7th graders. I have looked at Trail Guide to World History, Around the World in 180 Days, and a couple of others. I’ve considered using things like Expedition Earth as a starting point and building on it with grade level appropriate activities, living books, etc, but I ultimately feel that’s more work than I am willing/able to put into it. Ideally I need something that has very little teacher prep involved. Working half days means my prep and teaching time is very limited. We are all done in by 3 pm.
So what are your favorite Geography resources for these ages?
We did Winter Promise’s Children around the world a couple of years ago which is very similar to the MFW’s program. We loved it, the readers were awesome.
You can check out the website or get the catalogue, it might give you some ideas of books you can use. I don’t know how it compares price wise w/MFW if you wanted to do the whole program.
I saw this suggestion on the CMH site. Thought I’d share it in case it would be fun for your family.
“*** How the Heather Looks by Joan Bodger
The last term my students learned about the modern geography and place names of Great Britain using this book. It takes you on a trip across Great Britain with a family who attempts to locate the settings of popular classic children’s literature. This lovely website is devoted to helping your child learn the geography of their travels. http://www.storybookengland.com/index.php”
I love the Geography Matters! Their outlined wall maps are great for incorporating geography into history, literature, science, whatever. The student can mark in countries, cities, seas, oceans, rivers etc. We would mark on the maps (with a vis a vi marker) where every event happened or person was born or made their discovery, that we came across over the years all through elementary school.
You can choose additional geography activities using The Ultimate Geography and Timeline Guide. This book has ideas for all the way through high school. There are some fun sites on the web for learning maps too.
All of these resources can be used throughout the life of your homeschool-great value!
