    Hi There,

Hoping to hear from some of the British mums on this one too.  Linda had such a good post about British books recently, that it started me wondering about British movies.  My family is unique among our friends.  We are one of the few families that really enjoys and “gets” British humor and movies and books.  All of my favorite children’s books are British.  I just love how the British rely on their dialogues for their subtle humor and entertainment. I also love the scenery in the movies.

Anyways, now that Christmas is approaching, I’d like to learn which BBC movies are family friendly.  There are so many that I’ve never seen or read like Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, Wives and Daughters, and several other series.  I would rather not be surprised by inappropriate content, and wanted to get your recommendations (and any other Brit fans) of movies.  I’ve seen sales on different movies and would rather hear from you all first before purchasing any.

    Many Thanks,

    Betty

I love the A&E/BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth! Also, A&E’s movie about Victoria and Albert (with Jonathan Firth) is good, but I’m not sure if it’s out on DVD. Masterpiece Theatre has also had some good adaptations of Jane Austen’s books and Jane Eyre (or was that A&E too)?

Not necessarily BBC, but definitely British  we like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Hi, jujst a quick note, unfortunately my daughter has had some complications from her surgery yesterday and we are off to the hospital again to get her checked out – I am just waiting for my husband to come from work.  If things go well, I will give this post some thought and put some things together, if I cannot, please forgive me.  One word of warning about the BBC of today – they have become rather a shadow of their former selves and some of their newer movies are a lot racier than of old.  They still do wonderful programs, but you have to be careful – it seems modern audiences are wanting more flesh and they are supplying it sadly.  Still you cannot go wrong with the older ones, unless the content of the movie is of a sort that you do not like.  I know that some people do not like talking animals and such like, so would not like an off the top of my head suggestion, but we loved the DVD film of Graham’s Wind in the Willows, it is enchanting and I still watch it now as an adult.  I am loathe in some ways to suggest some titles because a lot of classic British literature had quite racey themes, adultery and such like – and as I don’t know what people consider appropriate in their own homes, it is a bit of a minefield making suggestions.  I don’t censor too much storyline, though I try and avoid nudity and overt scenes in that manner and also avoid too much violent content – however when I have a minute I will look through my collection and see what I have.  As an adult my daughters and I have enjoyed Brideshead Revisted, the older version, though it is not for children (my daughters are older teens).  OOps husband is here, I must go – I would appreciate a prayer for my daughters recovery if anyone has time.  More later.  Blessings – Linda

Just an update, they have admitted my daughter for the weekend – she is severely dehydrated from her procedure and surgery and has a strep throat on top of all that and has been unable to eat or drink, so she will be in the hospital for the weekend, and that is where I will be as well – so I won’t have time for much looking into things.  Hopefully they can get a handle on things, and she will be home soon.  Linda

    Linda,

I’m so sorry for your daughter!  She’s dealing with alot all at once!  Sending some prayers for a quick recovery.

    Blessings,

    Betty

Just an update, we have just brought our daughter home from the hospital, but she is in a fragile state, so I will be spending some time nurturing her back to health, it has been and is a worrying time – I do appreciate the prayers very much and thank you all.  I will check the site now and then as I do enjoy reading the posts, but my heart and head at the moment are with my daughter and the rest of our family – so I won’t be doing much posting.  I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving with good health and good company.  Bless you all – Linda
