Extent of Consequences

In your book, you mention giving consequences to children. If something is not done by child, u asked them to do 5 times, 10 times next time and maybe 20 times after that, when do you stop?

A child might have genuinely forgotten? They are not always in the moment so how do you make that judgement of just keep increasing the consequence?
