I have used Explode the Code with 4 children so far, and have loved it. My fourth daughter will be starting 1st grade this year. I am about to order ETC for her…..but before I do, want to hear if you see them as CM or Twaddle? IMO, I am thinking it’s reading, phonics, forming letters, ect. Can u suggest something different, if you don’t suggest it…..open to diferent ideas {I think} 🙂 I do need her to have some independent work while I do lots of other things with the 3 big kids, the 3 year old and the baby……?
We’ve used ETC for years as well. I think the primers are the best thing out there for learning letters. The lessons are so short and simple and my kids have all really enjoyed working through them. So many other phonics programs have a ridiculous amount of writing. When we’ve used other workbooks, I’ve had them skip some of the writing. I think if it works for your family, there’s no reason to switch.
We use and love ETC, though it is probably not very CM. My son did books 1 – 8 and used the last page of each lesson for a day 5 spelling test. He moved on to Spelling Wisdom 1 now for grade 5 copywork and dictation with no problems. I like that ETC goes through word families, has visual pictures in context with each word, and they can use the book mostly independently. It does not take long to do each day. We started using it with grade 1 Sonlight and kept it going even when we left Sonlight.
