We will be going to Module 1 next year! I was looking up the commentaries that are used as a resource for this year. The ones by Nancy Ganz. I have a few questions regarding this……It looks like only 2 of these books are used. Exodus and Numbers.
First off, if you used these books, how did your family like them? Second, why would they have skipped the Gensis volume?
Since most times AFTER you go through somehting, you wished you would have done it differently……
Im trying to think ahead here. Would any of you suggest reading the Genesis commentary this summer, BEFORE we actually start school in the fall? Or would that be repetative with what is in the plans?
I just heard such great reviews on these books….and I’m so excited to go back to the beginning! i want to soak it all IN! 🙂
I can’t answer your specific questions but I have these commentaries in my library and the families who have used them have loved them!
I use TruthQuest and her guides used to start with Ancient Egypt (before she did the Beginnings guide) so that would have used Exodus primarily with Joseph coming on the scene toward the end of Genesis. I would read the Genesis volume (with Scripture, of course) and get up to speed if it were me, but I’ve never used the Modules so don’t know the specifics.
How old are your kids? These books are great, but I wouldn’t use w/younger kids…it’s a lot of reading to read the Bible AND the commentary. My kids(10 and 13 then) often felt like I was re-reading the same thing and I had to keep specifying whether I was reading the Bible or the commentary:) But it’s great material in the Ganz books…sometimes I would just pull different aspects out of it that offered more insight. Good stuff:)
We will be doing Module 1 next year. I read in another discussion the recommendation to read the commentaries ahead and give your younger children the highlights that would clarify parts of the Bible for them. I did purchase the Exodus and Numbers books, and I agree with momto2blessings that it is a lot for the youngers. Since we’ll be using them more in depth when we go through Module 1 for the 2nd time they were worth puchasing.
In the fall, the grades qwill be 7, 5, 4…and down. Can the 7th grader hang>? Oh I am really hoping for some suggestions here. I can’t get them from the lirary in the whole state of Michigan to even preview…..so please tell all you can about these books.
If I can hold off and not get them this year, I will pass.
But, If I can make it work with the older 2, I will. Hoping not to bore them to tears tho.
Is the book explaining, behind the scenes things like culture and country and lifestyle….? I guess I don’t know what to think. I’ve never seen a commentary and can’t get it from the library!
I guess I was thinking I had a +great idea+ in jumping in before school starts and doing Genesis….since the module starts with Exodus. What do you think of this idea…..those having done these books before, w Module 1?
We are completing Module 1 now. The commentaries are good, but long and sometimes repetitive within each chapter/section. I read ahead and shared the very good nuggets with my 4th and 1st graders. I had my 7th grader read the commentary on her own. For ie. there is a section in the Exodus commentary that explains why God was going to strike Moses dead. This was a nugget worthy of sharing. The commentaries are available as e-books for less.
Module 1 starts with Genesis not Exodus, you just don’t use the commentary for Genesis. It is not uncommon in the CM community to use some of an author’s works, but not all for variety.
Does that help?
