Do you think this book is appropriate for a first grader or would it hurt to not use it. DS barely gets through the bible readings with his short attention span so im not sure he is ready for more in depth reading. What has been your experience with using this book with younger children and should I save it for later when we go through the modules at an older age?

Although we have only used the Genesis commentary (which isn’t reccomended specifically) I’d say this author’s perspective is a great addition to your Bible study/readings! My 6 year old and I have really enjoyed reading this along with Mod.1 – I would say though that somedays we have broken the chapter in half and read the other half the next day so we could keep the lessons short and lengthen the commentary’s timeline to match our readings timeline. Does that make sense?

    godselect37,

We too have to cut our reading time in half! We have gone very slowly through module 1 this year but we are picking up the pace and hopefully will work through the summer on it if we need to! Still not sure if I wanna order this or not!

I have used it with my first grader this year.  I have really enjoyed it, but I think it has been a bit much for him becuase of the length of some of the lessons.  Usually, if he narrates the Scripture reading well, I will allow him to doodle or use crayons and markers while I read the commentary lesson.  I also edit some of the reading to shorten it or I skip the Scripture references.  This has helped a lot with him.  My ds6 is squirmy and must be doing something with his hands all the time….. We also break the lesson in half sometimes.  I will say that the content of the commentary is excellent and complements Module 1 wonderfully.

We skipped it with our 7 year old this year and it hasn’t been a problem.

I read it to my kids, they were 4/5 and 6/7.  I really enjoyed it and would consider getting others for my own reading.  But, the kids didn’t enjoy it.  It was just too long.  If I had it to do again, I wouldn’t read it to them.  As I look back, it squashed their enjoyment of our class time.  They would also tell me that we’d “just read that in the Bible” and wonder why we had to read it again.

I think it would be a lot to read the bible and the commentary to a child that young, unless you were stretching it out.

I know it would have not worked for my dd at that age. She will be almost 8 yo when we get to the commentary, and I may still have to break it down for her.  If we weren’t doing AO in addition to G-D then it would probably work fine. But like the reader above, I noticed that if we have too much reading (which dd does love) it tends to squish the enjoyment of learning right out of a child.

I agree with you ladies! My son gets annoyed with too much reading and looses interests. I have a hard time getting through just the bible readings. I think I might wait till he’s older and we go through the module again. I wanna keep our lessons fun and short. He narrates better with shorter readings for now!
