Hi, My name is Rachael and I am the mother of 3 (so far, not currently expecting though) daughters. They are 11mo, 2.5, and 4.5.

I am very interested in the CM methods! I grew up in the public school system and I feel like I was robbed. I want my children to have a passion for learning, reading, and to have a deep, rich education. Living books, art appreciation, music appreciation, nature study, etc are what really appeal to me. Part of our homeschool journey will be beneficial to me, I hope! All the things that I desire for my children, I did not experience nor do I possess.

My oldest is very eager to learn to write, but not so much to read. She can recognize all letters but is having difficulty remembering letter sounds. Although, I may be expecting too much, too quickly. I took a look through some of the other threads here and took note of the phonics recommendations and will be looking into some of those programs.

I’m sure I’ll post often as I feel like I am completely clueless when it comes to homeschooling and planning. I am so excited to be here and begin my journey.

    Hi Rachael,

Welcome.  I hope you find this forum and the ideas of Charlotte Mason as much of a blessing as I have.  My 3 littles are very similar ages to yours- dd5, ds 2.5, and dd 10 (almost 11!) months.  I am sure you will find the resources that SCM offers very helpful to you on your journey – I sure have.  I don’t think I’ve found a dud yet and I have several of the SCM books.  May I particularly recommend the Early Years book?  It is the single best thing that I have read for doing “preschool”  – and has helped me to keep things simple…which I’m realizing that for me is probably going to be the make or break deal in having a sustainable homeschool (simplicity, that is.)  This and Ruth Beechick’s book “The 3Rs” are the things I really wish that I had found first as I was getting started.

    Blessings to you!

    Welcome, Rachael!

Your passions for your children and your own life sound like they fit perfectly with a CM-style education.  You’re in a wonderful spot to spend time studying CM before having to do much bookwork.  If you haven’t already, I highly recommend “For the Children’s Sake” and “When Children Love to Learn” for CM reading.  CM’s original 6 volumes are also highly recommended (on my list, I need to get to it—you can read for free at http://www.ambleside.com.)

If you’re like me, I felt pressure with my oldest to get her reading and writing early.  At 4yo. I couldn’t undrerstand how she could know letter sounds but not be able to blend!  Fortunately, I backed off—just a physiological issue and she eventually got it just fine.  My only advice would be to take it slow in the younger years, there’s no hurry.  Enjoy nature, fieldtrips, great living books and just short sessions on seatwork.

Blessings as you start.  This forum is a wonderful source of help and encouragement!  Gina
