Problem:  My boys 9 & 6 write notes in Church services and of course do written narrations from their SCM Geography Lessons.  However, they have a plethora of misspelled words and it is impossible for me to keep up with their errors, if we are in Church services.  As for the SCM Geography, I wonder if I should just have them orally narrate the given questions, until they have mastered spelling? I don’t know….I’m just sooo confused at this point!

I am open to all suggestions and help!

You’re right, oral narrations should be used almost exclusively for children younger than 10. Once they are 10 or so, you can start to gradually add in some written narration.

    Thank you, Mrs. Shafer!!

Do you have any suggestions on the notetaking problem I mentioned as well?

If they are not asking how to spell words during church, I would leave it alone. I would not want to discourage them from wanting to write.

I agree. There seems to be some sort of built-in filter when children are just dabbling in writing for fun. If they ask how to spell something, by all means, tell them. If they don’t ask, let them have fun putting their thoughts on paper.
