We talked on homeschoolreviews.com about TT Algebra 2 and the need for a graphing calculator and I said I would get back to you once we were further along in the course. Well my daughter has almost completed it (only 11 lessons and 2 tests to go!) and we have just now come across a couple of lessons about using a graphing calculator. We tried using graphing calculator apps but they didn’t work for us. We’ve chosen instead for my daughter to just continue doing the problems that she is able to do without a graphing calculator. It’s only covered over a few lessons (2, I think?). I skimmed the remainder of the textbook and didn’t see any more problems of this nature but it’s possible I missed them if there were only a few.

Thanks, Melanie! I totally forgot about this so I’m glad you remembered. Interesting that the free apps didn’t work. I wonder why. But it also doesn’t seem worth it to buy a calculator for just a few problems. They’re so expensive!

There are free apps so you and your son can try one and see how it works for y’all. We tried two different apps but they were different from the calculator TT uses and we couldn’t figure out how to make them work together. We didn’t spend a ton of time on this, however, as I don’t think it’s important at this stage. I’ve read various opinions on graphing calculators in high school and I feel pretty confident in my decision not to worry about learning to use them at this point.

Just wanted to update this:
We tried the free apps online as well (geogebra.com) and it worked for some things but not all of them. So he ended up skipping a few questions in the problem set as a result, but they were fewer than I thought they would be. He really didn’t miss much, and as he is not continuing higher math, nor will he need it, I’m not worried about it either.
