Both of my kids are entering the high school years (terrifying!!!), and we have never done ANY formal foreign language lessons (even more terrifying!). We’ve dabbled a bit with Rosetta Stone over the last few years, but nothing serious, and at this point I have no idea what to do…
So, does anyone have any suggestions for a serious course, either online or as a curriculum, for French and Spanish? Something where they’ll actually be fluent and able to hold a real conversation once they’ve completed the course.
We use La Clase Divertida online high school for Spanish. It meets twice a week for 1.25 hours each day. Senor Gamache is the instructor and does a fantastic job with the kids. They have online lab work that they get instant feedback on their progress as well as other work between classes. He has the stronger, older students tutor any that need assistance. They use the same book for Spanish I, II, and III. My dd will be in his Spanish III this year. I have no reservations about recommending this course.
Mr. G is no longer teaching German, so I just enrolled my middle son into Oklahoma State’s German Online course, and I am very pleased so far. It has recorded sessions, scheduled speaking appointments with a teacher, tests and quizzes, including reading passages. And much more reasonable than many online courses. They have a similar-format Spanish.
Does anyone know if there are options (with this Mr. G. Currclick offering) if you want to start foreign language earlier, i.e. junior high level (grade 6 through 8?) I’m going to check this out more, but wondering if anyone already had the answer…
We opted to have my daughter take a high school level American Sign Language class through a local homeschool program this year. Another daughter takes Spanish through the state virtual school program. These solutions work for our family. Best wishes in finding your answer!
