I need help detemining if this is enough for my kids. I am trying to really commit to the CM methods but I am new to this and I am not sure if my kids should be doing more. They are done with their tablework in about an hour every day. The rest of the day is family time and independent reading. Which we are loving, but I want to make sure I am not slacking. Especially for my seventh grader. So here is 7th grade Language Arts at my house.
Spelling Wisdom 2x a week
Writing Strands 2x a week (I know this is not a favorite among CMers but it really works for this child)
Journal 1x a week
occasional written narrations (we are new to this so we are still focused on daily oral narrations)
grammar – this is just me teaching out of a grammar handbook a few times a week
I also have independent science readings, historical fiction, and a biography assigned to him.
Does this seem like enough? He is a late bloomer and last year was the first year he could handle any significant independent reading, writing has been brutal for him. He is just now starting to do these things with ease so I am trying to challenge but not overwhelm him.
Thanks everyone, I am trying to incorporate CM methods but cannot buy anything so I am just tweaking what I already have.
Hi Crystal! That sounds like plenty to me. In the 7th grade, my daughter was reading from a classic every day for 25 minutes, writing one 1 page long narration a week, doing copywork 4 times a week, dictation once a week, and grammar twice a week. She also read other books for her history and science studies.
For comparison, my 6th and 8th graders are doing SW twice a week, cursive copywork (to gain some cursive fluency), history/science independent readings, and written narrations. We’ll add Classical Composition: Fable later this year. Grammar is covered with Visual Latin and reviewed with SW. Literature is covered with family readings.
I think your plan sounds fine.
