My son had early issues with reading and writing, and so we choose to delay. At 7.5 he really took off reading.  We are working through McGuffy’s First, and he does well because the type is large and the sections are short.  He is about up to level now on reading.

Writing is a different matter.  He writes on his own, making lists, copying things out of books (like E=MC2) and making diagrams.  I have started him again on just writing a few letters a day to see which ones he needs to work on.  The problem is reversals.  He has a hard time remembering which side 2/5/s, 3, 6/9, etc. start on and what they look like.  He can copy them correctly, but not originate them on his own correctly.  They do not hender his reading anymore.

My question is should I just keep going with starting simple sentence copywork and build up?  Is there a copy book or guide that would be useful?  Has anyone else dealt with this and had success with something?

My youngest daughter (6) was having problems with reversing her numbers.  My 10 year old daughter plays school with her and made a up a story with the number line to help her remember.  Something like:  1 was the line leader and everyone followed him.  Until they came to 5.  He turned the other way!  6 did what 5 did but 7 had a mind of her own and she turned back around.  I don’t remember the rest but you can figure out something.

I guess what I have found is that sometimes figuring out a memory trick is helpful in an area where they seem to have a block.

My two oldest kids reversed letters less and less as they got older.  I correct it as they come up, but try not to make too big a deal of it.  Usually I just say, “Whoops!  That ones backwards!” and may or may not have them fix it.  If it’s a copywork lesson I always have them fix it.  For other writing or math, I may just move on.
