I tried finding a tag for these curriculums, but had little success in further detail. If anyone has used one of these programs, I’d love to hear about your experience. I am strongly considering English from the Roots Up flashcards as a vocabulary starter. But I don’t buy until I have counsel. 🙂
If you’re simply looking for roots, I really like Eng. from the Roots Up. Very easy to implement. However, I haven’t tried giving it to my kids independently. We use it as was directed. I have them outline the card in green (Greek) or red (Roman/Latin). I write the root on one side and they write the definition, and some variations. It doesn’t take much time. Don’t know if that helps much:) Blessings, Gina
I don’t mind teaching and guiding my kids a little bit with Latin, so this might work. Thanks Gina.
My son took Latin for one year in a classical school in 3rd grade. He (and I) did not like it! Maybe it was the teacher’s approach, but I prefer not to go into all of that again. BUT, I do see importance of learning the roots and understanding why language is the way it is. Shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water, right? 🙂
If your kids are old enough, I think you could make it pretty independent….they could just copy the cards themselves and you could occasionally quiz using the given cards as flashcards or something.
I was also gifted this game, which looks fun and I hope to incorporate next year: http://www.amazon.com/Eternal-Hearts-Rummy-Roots/dp/B000GTBCBQ. It’s been a while since I looked ati it, but I believe it’s like go-fish w/roots. I think they’re given a ‘cheat sheet’ of meanings and try to connect roots together to make words (if I remember correctly!) Blessings, Gina
How about Word Roots A1 from Critical Thinking Press? I got it for my dd, age 11, to use independently this year as her first exposure to LAtin, since she’s starting LfC the year after this next one. It comes in book form and software:
Rachel, if it is independent then I’m definitely going to consider it. I like the Critical Thinking company, even though I admit to feeling overwhelmed with all their good options. Thanks for the links! Off to check these out…
Can this program act as an introduction to Latin?? Is it mainly for understanding root words?? I ask because I have it and would like to use it (or what Rachel suggested from Critical Thinking) for now. I’m guessing that I would still need another Latin program, providing we want to go further, but I’m just wanting to use what I have this year then purchase something else later on.
Would it be appropriate for a 13yo to use this (English From the Roots Up) this year or semester then use another program later??
I had planned to purchase a program (Getting Started or Latin for Children, or something) but I have this already and would like to not spend the extra if this would do for now.
This program would give you vocabulary, Latin (and English of course, since so many words come from Latin) but no grammar. You’ll need another program, the ones you mentioned would be fine, to begin to teach the grammar.
