My daughter is doing English for the Thoughtful Child vol. 1. I read an old post about Queens Language Lessons, and after looking at samples, I believe that is where I want to go next. After EFTTC #1, should I start with Language Lessons for the Very Young vol. 1 or vol. 2? My daughter has had some grammar covering nouns, pronouns, and verbs, but I needed something more gentle for her. Just doing a little grammar here and there is better for her. I’m just not sure which volume of Language Lessons to move into. She is 12 with a learning disability. I was doing a separate grammar book with her, but I think we need to take that slower. EFTTC is going well, but it only has 62 lessons, so I will be needing something else probably midway through the year. I know there is another EFTTC book, but I am leaning more toward Language Lessons. I see Language Lessons has 180 lessons, so it is set up to do a lesson a day. Do you who use it do a lesson a day? Just curious how often others do these lessons.

I have not used EFTTC. My son used Queens Language Lessons for the Very Young vol. 2 for grade 2 as a mostly independent subject, and a first intro. to grammar concepts. My understanding is that vol. 1 and 2 are much the same with vol. 2 having more practice of the same skills taught in vol. 1. He did vol. 2 instead of vol. 1 simply because I found it for a good price on ebay. There is a lot of copywork and some intro. to capitalization, nouns, etc. and there are some picture studies prompting a little creative writing, and some poetry. I plan to use vol. 2 for my dd this year and she is also learning cursive formation using Handwriting without Tears. She has not had any prior grammar, except what she overhears from her older brother’s lessons. I plan to use it daily, so using the 180 lessons for the whole year. You could stretch it out to 1 1/2 years though. But that is the only copywork and grammar for her. I plan to have her mostly independently doing it. After this, I move them to Writing Tales 1 for grade 4.

Wings2fly – Thank you for the information. It is helpful. I think vol.2 will work since my daughter has had some grammar. I would use it daily. When you go to Writing Tales, do you stop Language Lessons? It looks like a nice writing program, but I think I would continue on with Language Lessons for Elementary. I need consistency for my daughter. I just wondered if Writing Tales would be used along with LL. I wish I would have used LL earlier instead of a ‘grammar’ book. I think LL will be a good fit.

No, we do not do both in the same year. There are only two levels of Writing Tales available now, so I am going back to Queen Language Lessons after WT book 2. Then in 8th or 9th grade, I may switch to something more formal….not sure yet.

We did First Language Lessons books 1-4 which was grammar intense. I have generally bought and used the Queen books all along the way and we used them daily. We did not find them too taxing and I do have them for this year. But I am going to be using Using Language Well for my 10yo this year. I think it will be a good fit for him. My 13yo is going into Queens Secondary 1 book next.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered vol. 2 of LL for Elementary. I won’t need it until she finishes EFTTC, but I think this will be a good fit. With my daughter’s dyslexia and poor spelling, I have started using Spelling You See. This is working well, so Using Language Well would not work, since Spelling Wisdom is to be used with it. I think I’m set for this year. We’ll see how it goes. But, one thing I know is I need consistency. The last two to three years it has been trial and error with curriculum while trying to understand her learning disabilities in language and math. It seems like I finally have a plan that is helping her move forward. I appreciate the help.
