I started homeschooling 4 years ago when my oldest was 4 or 5. We mostly do school year round, with most of our break in the summer. Because of this, I have never really taken the time to collect work for a portfolio or anything like that. I just save all their finished work in notebooks and boxes.

My aunt suggested that we do a Christmas Open House for everyone in the family to get together and see the girls school work and what we do. I am the only one in my family who homeschools, so I am sure they are curious about it anyway.

The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. It’s fun to get together, and Christmas is a great time for families. PLUS, it would give me a great reason to tie everything up for the year and get a fresh start for the new year. (I like to keep records from Jan to Dec).

Here’s my problem: I don’t even know where to start! 4 years of work, and I have 5 children, I’m not even sure what to do with it all.

How do you know what to keep, and what’s the best way to keep it? In a portfolio notebook, a filing cabinet, a tote? I’m not even sure what exactly I would display at the open house. We do lots of reading, narrating, real life learning, so there isn’t a huge paper trail.

Any advice or tips you all have about how to organize their work will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Do you blog? I was just thinking you could blog the work you have done over the years. You could either start with this year and work your way back. Then again, you could work from when they are young and work ahead. This way the family has a way of seeing where you are in the future. I think I would start with the first year and work forward. Then, those family memebers reading your blog in the future know where you are at. I also heard there is a company that publishes your years worth of blogs. this way you have it for the last 4 years in book form and your family members can see and read it. Your children can remember what you did year after year also. Hope this helps. Good Luck it sounds like a wonderful project. I wish I had the time to do it. Maybe I can start with what I have now. ??? 🙂 Maybe someone on here can tell you the publishers that they went with or what they did.

Yes, you can print blogs using blurb.com and some others. I always use blurb and the books are amazing in quality. They have a process for pulling your blog and putting it into a book for you. Or you can do it page by page.

You just download blurb.com for free and they have tutorials if you need them to walk you though it. I did!

If you go this route, you would need to sign up for their e-blasts b/c you can get as much as 50% off a book if you wait for a coupon code.

There was another thread a few months back about this same topic. I will try to search for it; lots of great ideas in it.

Thanks! That’s a great idea! I do not blog, but I remember thinking it would be a good idea, just to have a record of our schoolwork. Thanks for reminding me, and I am off to check out those sites!
