We recently started prepared dictation.  I am following Sonya’s advice (I think) about reading through the passage with my child and asking him to study it and make mental note of any words he doesn’t know how to spell.  The problem I’m seeing, is that he thinks he knows how to spell everything!  Pretty much, if he can read it, he thinks he knows how to spell it.  For instance, this week “people” was one of the words in a passage.  He spelled it during dictation as “peple”.  Any ideas for how I can get him to really concentrate and not just assume he knows the spelling?  I’m hesitant to take the word out of context, but should I choose some of the words I think he may have trouble with and have him spell those on the white board or with magnetic letters prior to dictation?

Yes, that is exactly what I would do.  Before he begins to prepare, have him write potential concern words on the whiteboard.  Then teach him what he needs to know to spell them correctly, and only after that proceed with the dictation.

I believe Sonya recommends this in a video somewhere.  We are to set them up for sucess, not failure.
