My children (6, 5) don’t seem to take to drawing and coloring like the average child. It makes me sad because I did all of that when I was their ages. I’ve given them a ton of material to “do crafts” but it’s short-lived and doesn’t usually lead to much. I want to encourage drawing/coloring now so when the time comes we can do notebook pages, nature study pics, etc. I don’t want to force it down their throats of course so I’m trying to figure out how to encourage this. Would scheduling a drawing lesson (Draw Write Now) each week be a good way? How did any of you encourage your non-artists? If I could figure out how to place an easel on a trampoline we’d be good to go….but that’s not going to happen ; )
My ds9 has only shown a real interest in drawing the last few months. Coloring has always been off and on. All I did was provide supplies-watercolor paint and cheap paper plates for painting, colored pencils, crayons, markers, a spiral art kit. What got him finally interested was when I enrolled him in 4h last year. He liked winning ribbons at the fair for his craft projects!
It sounds as if your children would rather play outside than do art inside? If that’s the case, I came across these ideas yesterday when I was looking for ideas for painting rocks:
My DS has never been big on colouring or drawing either. Until he was 5 he basically wouldn’t hold a pencil or crayon unless I insisted, and then it was about 10 seconds before he gave up.
DS (now nearly 6) still isn’t a huge fan of colouring, but he will sit down and do these for a while. My kids do them while they are listening to bedtime stories.
We’re still working on the drawing! We are using “Meet the Masters” for our art curriculum, and DS is starting to warm up to the idea.
Maybe your kids just haven’t discovered an art medium or technique that connects with them. For example, I’ll go through a picture book with my son (who never liked to color or draw) and tell him about the technique the artist used. Then while he is still stimulated and thinking about the book I let him go to town with the technique the artist used. We did that many times and he started to discover art mediums that he did like. He now loves to watercolor paint!
I’m into artsy things and I don’t really like crayons – I don’t like the way the color hits the paper. I *love* oil paints. When I was young and discovered oil pastels and paints I thought I had died and gone to heaven!
Maybe keep trying different kinds of paint, mediums, papers, etc. And don’t forget about sculpture…. PVC pipes, boards, screws, etc…. it can all be art. 🙂
