Has anyone read and put to practise Emily Barnes book “More Hours in My Day: Proven Ways to Organize Your Home, Your Family, and Yourself“? I’d love to hear if it has proven helpful in your life. Thanks ~ Heather
I HAVE read it, I have an older version and I find it to be very helpful. One difference between her and many organizers these days, is that she doesn’t stress getting rid of everything. She is very much of the keep EVERYTHING mindset, but it must have a place and it must be super organized, because it’s no good to have it if you can’t find it. She’s great for people that struggle to throw it all away or give it away (though I’m finding that a good balance is helpful). If you’re the purging type, there are probably better organizational models for you to follow.
I had the pleasure of meeting Emily Barnes and attending a seminar of hers several years ago. She is such a sweet lady with wonderful ideas and a heart for helping women create a peaceful home. I think her book is a great read and I still use many ideas I learned from her book and seminar.
However, her overall system is too detailed and complicated for me. Also, I am a purger and like Rebekah mentioned, she encourages you to keep everything but keep it organized. I do use her box/index card system for those things that I don’t know what to do with (hubby’s letterman jacket that he wants to keep, some quilts my grandmother made me, seasonal items, etc.).
All that said, her ideas have proven helpful, but overall I’ve found other ideas that helped me more. I have another friend who swears by Emily’s ideas and has completely organized her home using them. I guess it depends on your personality on how much you get out of it, if that makes sense.
A recent organizational book that I absolutely love is Organized Simplicty by Tsh Oxenreider.
Thanks for sharing, Ladies. I’m assuming her book may not suit me well then, since I am a purger and sometimes give away too much. I still have a problem with keeping an organized system in place continually. Seems things are always moving from room to room -here, there & everywhere. I see my library has a copy of Emily’s book and Organized Simplicity, so I’ll check them out. Back to the drawing board – Thanks again! 🙂
Like Hope I love Organized Simplicty by Tsh Oxenreider – I have found it very successful for me, and love the way she goes about things. I don’t do things exactly as she says, for example I am not holding a garage sale, I am donating, selling on various sites and taking things to the thrift store on our base. However I like her attitude and recommend it.
I use Emily’s Barnes storage box numbering system. I am also a purger, so this helps me to keep things I ought to keep without feeling like I need to get rid of it because it is cluttering the house. I have gotten rid of some good things in the past because I didn’t need the item at the moment. This is especially true for me with newborn baby clothes. Every time I donate the clothes, I find that I am pregnant again. That is our family joke…and we still have the newborn clothes of baby #7 (21months old) in the house. I have a couple of boxes of homeschool curriculum that I tried to sell but couldn’t. The stuff in these boxes are great and will eventually be used, so I am glad that I still have them. I finally like the idea that it is okay to keep things for later use, as long as it is out of the way, easily accessible, and documented. I use daily notes app on my ipad instead of an index card box because it is searchable.
