I know that ULW is very new and there may not be anyone who has used it as well as ELTL. If there is anyone here who could give some feedback I would greatly appreciate it. Obviously ULW is not available for older students yet, so I will most likely go with ELTL for them, but I am curios about for the younger ones.
I used ELTL last year and will be using ULW this year.
I used ELTL level 1 and 3 with 2 of my children. It was good but I ended up not using a lot of what was included.
I did not care for the dictation, because it did not allow time to prepare, so I used SW instead of ELTL.
It included picture study, but we would often skip because it would be on an odd day, so we went back to SCM picture portfolios.
The grammar for level 3 was good, but DD did not retain much. Maybe it moved too fast because only 1 or 2 exercises to practice before a new concept?
Some of the book selections were good, but others my kids did not care for. I would sub books but then the exercises did not match.
I think what it turned out for me is that I prefer a broken apart approach. Selecting our own books for reading and narration, spelling wisdom for spelling and copy work, picture study on its own, reading poetry on its own a few times/week.
That is why I am excited for ULW. It will use SW, which we like, in a more indepth way introducing grammar and narration prompts, with out extra parts and pieces that we will not use.
ELTL is a great, solid program. Very nicely pulled together and easy to use. It just was not a fit for us. I would print out samples, ELTL gives a very nice sample, and explore which wirks best for your family.
You actually made some very valid points I had not thought of. We are using SW, plus doing poetry and picture studies using the resources from SCM. We also already do our reading and narration from the literature groups from SCM. So I guess it would definitely make more sense to go with ULW. Now if only the the higher levels would be available quickly.
We used ELTL 1 and about half of 2, and I can echo what Sarah2106 said. It’s a great program, but I found I prefer separate literature, poetry, and picture study resources. I would have been content to continue it with modifications, but when ULW came out I knew it would be a better match for us.
I’ve actually been looking at ELTL and ULW so this discussion was very timely 🙂
I have the beginning levels of both and in reading the above posts, I’m wondering if you could simply do the activities in ELTL and not read all the books, particularly if you’ve previously read them?
Also, when looking at Level 1 of ULW and Level 2 of ELTL, it looks like they cover different things. I’m wondering if they could be used simultaneously? They seem complimentary to me.
This is all food for thought 🙂 I have some other questions about ULW, but will start a new thread.
Thanks,
Melissa
