I have a 7 & 8 yo and used Outdoor Secrets last year. I plan to use guidelines from SCM – Pond and Stream followed by 106 Days, Birds, Jacks, etc

I have a 2 & 4 yo as well.  Even though they listen in sometimes should I plan on following the order above?  That will mean I’m doing 2 different sciences in 2-3 years?

Is this normal?  I know with history, the younger siblings pick up where the family is knowing they’ll cycle through again.  I just don’t want them to miss these great programs.

    Thanks.

You might find that in 2-3 years, your older children are ready for more independent, higher level of science study.  Then you would just be teaching the younger children with the science from SCM.  This could be Apologia or suggestions from SCM and/or AO.  My 5th grade son read most of the SCM living science books this year on his own and narrated them to me.

He read mostly the ocean books on that list, plus Pagoo by Holling and the Burgess Seashore Book.

He will read Jack’s Insects next, on his own.  It is meant for age 10 & up.

Science is something we’ve taken year by year.  We’ve used AIG’s God’s Design series, Apologia, 106 Days, and various living books.

Next year we’ll be doing SCM’s Burgess study 2 day’s per week, reading a living science book once a week (to finish one book each term), and having a nature study/walk once a week.  I’m going to assign my older two (5th and 8th grade) readings from Exploring Planet Earth to give them more of a challenge.

I’m not sure what we’ll be doing down the road…I have Pond and Stream and Outdoor Secrets and would love to complete them at some point!  That will mean splitting them up, but by then I’ll have a high schooler  who will need her own level of materials anyway.

Is Jacks considered higher level science for a 5th-6th grader?

Would the above programs from SCM prepare a student for an online science intensive or similar come 6th grade?

Jack’s Insects is for grades 4-6.

I plan to have him use some books from the narration notebook to go along with it.
