    Hello Everyone.

Okay. So I have a curriculum question for elementary science.

Has anyone ever heard of or has used Living Science Study Guide by Nicole Williams of A Delectable Education at http://sabbathmoodhomeschool.com/living-science-curriculum/   ?????

It looks interesting but I’m not sure if it’s a complete science curriculum or should just be used as a supplement.

Would love any thoughts, advice, or help.

Maybe if anyone clicks the link and checks it out they could give me their thoughts???

We have in the past used Apologia science. I would love to move towards doing science in a more CM style way. If that makes any sense.

    Thanks!

Hi Ashley! I love Nicole and A Delectable Education. I really enjoy their podcasts. I would have reservations about using a science curriculum that she has written. I’ve looked at them and they look wonderful!

    Melanie,

I really appreciate you responding to me. I am at such a loss when it comes to science.
I know how very important this subject is and I want my kids growing up with a love for and a full/healthy education in the sciences, but nothing we have used thus far seems to be working very well or clicking.
You said that you have looked at the science curriculum that Nicole has written and you said that they look wonderful, but that you would have reservations about using them though. Could you maybe expound a little on as to why?
Would you happen to have any recommendations for a more Charlotte Mason style science curriculum for upper elementary (4th and 5th grades)?
Again, thank you so much for your time in responding to me.  I truly appreciate it.

I am so sorry! I meant to type that I would have no reservations about using her curriculum! I think her programs look wonderful!

I also think that SCM’s nature study courses look great. Neither were available when my children were elementary age. We used mostly library books with a bit of Considering God’s Creation and Apologia thrown in here and there. We also enjoyed Christian Liberty Press Nature Readers.

Ambleside Online science is wonderful as well!

I heard Dr Wile or Berean Builders once say that in elementary the best prep for highschool science is s good understanding of elementry math. No specific elementary curriculum is necessary not even his. I think he did add that encouraging investigation and curiosity were important. So many some science experiments or nature study? I found it freeing at least. No need to kill a love for science before they even can get started.

I don’t know anything about the one you referenced,  but I bought Considering God’s Creation. It looks promising, and Dr. Wile used to recommend it(before he made his own).

    Hi Ashely,

We have used Science from Sabbathmoodhomeschooling. We LOVE the books. I use Apologia very lightly for my 2nd and 5th grade daughters. I actually need to order more from our library. We are studying the human body. Have fun! Remember keep it fun and they will love it too!

We have been using some of Nicole’s science guides this year, and I’m really enjoying them. Science has always been a subject that just falls flat at our house, I suspect because we never did a completly CM style curriculum. I was trying to have my kids narrate from dry textbook like books, or just read living books without any further investigation (experiments) and no one ever really connected with the ideas, definitely  not “living.” Last year we used scm bird guide last year and that really opened our eyes to living science, like a breath of fresh air. After “A Delectable Education” did a few podcasts on science in a CM education, and reading some of Charlotte’s original writings on the subject, I feel like I finally get what to do now. And I feel Sabbath Mood Homeschool’s science guides (and SCM’s guides for elementary) fully put together a CM science curriculum.

So that’s my long answer… my short one is that I am currently using Nicole’s guides, I really like them and would highly recommend them.

Nicole’s guides are more set up to use term by term rather than one guide for all the year. So for the form 2 guide (4-6th grades) you would do one guide for 12 weeks then move onto another topic. There are three days of lessons planned a week (33 total, 12th week being exams). One day you read from a nature lore book of your choosing, one day reading from the topical book that the guide is focusing on, and one day doing experiments or special studies. There are also lots of discussion points and links/suggestions for further reading… it’s all very well done!

For form 3 and above (7th grade and up) they continue doing the term by term topical guide (again 3 days of lessons a week for one term) but also add in biology one day a week all year. We are using her form 3 biology guide this year and it is simply wonderful!

Ive never used apologia so I cannot compare… but let me know if you have any specific questions.

    Heather
