I don’t know if this is the type of question I can post here; if it isn’t, please delete it. Dh and I are interested in finding some sort of gadget for comparing grocery prices between stores, such as Wal-Mart and Sam’s. We don’t have smart phones, so those apps are not an option. We’ve tried looking on Amazon and ebay, but we must not be using the correct search terms. Any ideas?
I have no idea if such a thing exists but I keep a handy little price notebook in my purse that I update frequently. It’s worked for me for years, although of course it is pretty low-tech.
While it’s not a gadget that you can carry with you, I have begun to find http://www.dontforgetthemilk.com/ to be helpful in tracking and comparing grocery prices. It’s a website for planning grocery shopping that was recommended by someone on this forum. (And thank you, whoever you are–I have forgotten who!)
I have barely skimmed the surface of what I can do on this site, but I have begun to create “lists” of groceries by store name by putting in the items and prices from my grocery receipts. Then, I can compare before I go shopping or compare one store’s regular price against another’s sale price/after coupon price. For example, I usually purchase a certain brand of toothpaste from store A at $1.29. Store B normally sells the same toothpaste at $1.99, but this week I have a coupon for .75 off (and they will double it), so the final price will be .49! If I hadn’t had the coupon, I would have simply compared Store A’s price to Store B’s to make the choice.
What we’re looking for is something we can take to the store with us. We bought milk at Sam’s on Friday and spent a long time figuring out if snacks were cheaper. We went to Walmart today, and found some of the items were cheaper there this week. Does dontforgetthemilk.com do that? I couldn’t tell from a quick glance at the site.
The site doesn’t look things up for you; you have to input the stores and prices from either ads or your most recent receipt. If the price goes up since you last bought a particular item at a particular store, you won’t find that out until you actually get to the store.
If you can find a used Palm PDA (an old B&W is fine as well) you can install Handy Shopper. It’s a nice little app that does lists and can handle per store prices. (They have a Yahoo Group that has information about different uses. I haven’t used the app in a LONG time, but am thinking of getting it again. I’ve never found anything like it.)
Wow – sorry didn’t realize this was such an old thread.
