I will be taking my two 8yo sons to the national championship of the FIRST robotic competition next month in St Louis. (My team my husband coaches won the regional competition last weekend – such fun!) The arenas are named after different scientists – Einstein, Archemedes, Curie, Galileo and Newton – and I thought it would be nice if we did a little study about each before traveling. We have previously covered Galileo pretty well and I’ve read one story about Curie to them (which wasn’t easy to follow). I’m looking for resources about these scientists that are a good fit for 2nd graders. If you know of any I should be sure to get, please let me know.
Also we’ll have one day in St Louis before we watch the competition so if anyone knows of something wonderful to do there, I’d love to hear that also. The boys are excited about the pool hotel, so it would have to compete with that! 🙂
We just read a great little book called I, Galileo by Bonnie Christensen, although you already covered him. 😉
Free things to do:
The St, Louis Zoo, Art Museum, State History Museum in Forest Park are all grouped together where the 1904 World’s Fair was held (each has it’s own spot, of course!). The Zoo is wonderful – actually, we enjoy all of them and have had many field trips to them. The musuem just opened a new exhibit of French Impressionists but that will cost money.
There is a Science Center which is also free. This has a bunch of space exhibits (NASA) and then as you go through there are hands on things to try and some free class type demonstrations of science-related things.
Purina Farms
These cost money to do:
Grant’s Farm
Magic House – hands on children’s museum. I keep hearing that it is wonderful, but we haven’t made it up there yet
6 Flags (not sure if they are open yet)
The St. Louis Arch and Museum on the Mississippi River front (it costs to get inside the museum and it costs to go up in the top of the arch) but the museum is free to wander around in.
sheraz has a great list! Our favorite of the free ones is the Science Center. It is technically in Forest Park too, although doesn’t quite feel like it. They do have an Imax and planetarium that cost extra, but the free stuff is wonderful.
The Magic House is overrated, in my opinion, but I.think I’m the only one who feels that way. lol The kids love it! I just think it’s a bit much on the price…like $10ish per person. But then, I think I’m spoiled because of all the wonderful free places here.
I guess it is in Forest Park (as I should realize from my time in the History Museum looking at that map!) 😉 It doesn’t feel like it because we take a different exit to get to it.
