Have you read any of Teale’s books? Are they too dry? I’m thinking of having my 10th grader read one (maybe Circle of the Seasons) on her own or do it as a read aloud for my 7th & 6th graders. Would you recommend his books?
I have read nearly all of Edwin Way Teale’s books, and I have steadily collected them all over the years. I absolutely love them and can recommend them – now my daughters read a couple of his books and enjoyed them as well when they were 16-17 and we read Circle of the Seasons as a read aloud for fun. We are all nature lovers in our home, and love all the nature books we have read – if your daughter is not into nature at all, it may be harder to get the enthusiasm going – but I would try. He writes beautifully and everything is so informative and interesting. The girls read A Naturalist Buys a Farm, Springtime in Britain, Wandering Through Winter, North with the Spring, and Circle of the Seasons, they enjoyed them all.
I would try them, they are older books obviously but he was a top notch naturalist and I think worth the effort. Linda
Thank you, Linda, you were a big help! I think we’ll give Springtime in Britain a try since my oldest will be studying the history of England this Fall.
Good choice Julie, because it was written in 1970, things have obviously changed in the time since then, however I have been to all the places he mentions in Springtime in Britain, and it was so nice to read about all the places I remember. Because I was a young adult in 1970 I was traveling a lot around Britain at that time and he has done an excellent job in depicting my homeland. I hope you enjoy it and also enjoy studying the history of England, we have a lot of it! He really is one of my favorite authors. I have also learned a tremendous amount about your beautiful country by reading his books and that is another reason I love reading his work so much. Linda
