  • Im thinking on a trip to the Gettysburg battlefield. As I was researching I saw where they offer bike tours and since my husband is a bike guy, this sounds appealing to us. But we have little ones including a 3 year old and I’m concerned the tour would be too long for her (although she usually enjoys bike rides).

Has anyone done this before, or know of someone who has and can give me input?? Pennsylvania is over a thousand miles from where I live and I’d hate to not plan this correctly. 🙂

    Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

We live not too far from Gettysburg, but we’ve never done a bike tour so I can’t help you there.  However, we do love going there!!

    How old are your kids?

I love Gettysburg, but haven’t done the bike tour.  I would almost guess though that it would be a better way to go with a small child.  The getting in and out of a vehicle is sooooo tiring.

    My kids are 13, 9, 6, and 3 1/2.

We went to Gettysburg a few years ago. We didn’t do a bike tour, but it sounds like it could be fun if everyone in the family is up to riding a few miles of hills. I remember a lot of hills. 😉 Would you have a bike trailer for the little ones?

We had a tour guide who came into our car and took us all over the area. We did it this way because surprisingly it was cheaper than getting the bus tour for our whole group. One of my sons  was VERY into civil war history and the guide personalized his presentation for the interests of our 3 teenagers. Talking about both facts (the army was gathered over there) and the personalities and strategy (based on diaries, etc what the commanders where thinking/planning). It was fantastic!!!! The guide REALLY knew his stuff and it was one of the best things we did on our whole 2 month trip.

I also recommend the Civil War museum in Harrisburg. It is relatively new. They had a scavenger hunt for kids. There are lots of little touristy things in Gettysburg too. We did a wax museum of the Civil War which was a little cheesy but I think was good for kids because they coudl see scenes from that time displayed before them.

I have not been to Gettysburg and I know nothing of bike tours, but our vacation was to Williamsburg, VA and we found it worth our time and drive to add in a day trip to our Nation’s Capital which was about 2 hours away. It really makes it all come alive for the kids when they learn about government and the monuments, etc. The Smithsonian museums and monuments are free and we went to three of the museums, plus walked around to all of the monuments in the evening with all the pretty lights shining on them. I think it is 2 hours or less drive from Gettysburg. We live far away too and I hated to miss out on seeing DC while in the area. Just something for you to consider.

Thanks Nebby and Sarah. I’ve heard good things on the Harrisburg museum. And yes, D.C. will be on our list to visit. We actually went there about 5 years ago but our kids are older now and it would be a good experience to revisit. Such a neat place!

On my blog back in 2005 I wrote all about our huge adventure to the east coast, DC, NYC, Boston, etc. I have a lot of links to places to see and other info. http://curlywhirly.blogspot.com/2005_04_01_archive.html Maybe something helpful will be in there?
