My son just in the past two months at the age of seven is finally getting a breakthrough with his reading skills. We are currently reading the pathway readers and some bob books. What are some other good beginner readers that I could keep on hand for leisure reading during the summer! We are still on a first grade level but he’s doing so good right now and I am so happy. We really struggled for awhile there but it finally is clicking for him and the scm reading kit has been a godsend!

Does your library have a section of books divided by reading level? If so, take him to the library and let him pick out the book…my DS is 1st grade this year and he just got enthusiastic about reading 2 months ago…exciting times!! His reading level quickly jumped up once he started reading books he picked out himself

National Geographic had leveled readers which my son LOVES!!! Subjects range from plants, animals, weather, mummies, etc….

Our library has a handout titled ‘Earliest Early Readers’ or something like that. Might yours? I could probably scan mine for you if you think you would like something like that.

I agree that letting him choose things he wants to read is definitely the surest way to progress in reading.
We move from first grade readers to the Pathway readers, then into the easy to read chapter books. My first grader loves reading for himself what we are studying in history, so we get books like, “Sam the Minuteman” and “George the Drummer Boy”. We have really enjoyed the “I Can Read 3” series, as a whole.
Once my kids can read fairly fluently, we move into easy chapter books. Honestly, I have found the Sonlight list of readers to be very helpful in the beginning stages. I don’t like their curriculum as a whole (for us) and I don’t agree with some of the books they use in grades 3 and up, but for beginning readers I think their book list is fairly helpful.
Be sure you let him progress at his own pace!

Check out the ‘I Can Read History’ and ‘I Can Read Science’ lists on this page. IMO so many of the early readers in our library aren’t really worth reading. 🙁 Frog and Toad are good though, and Henry and Mudge really aren’t too bad either.

Heart of Dakota has a nice list for “emerging readers”. We especially like the Beginner’s Bible, Arnold Lobel books, and Christian Liberty Nature Readers. The Bears on Hemlock Mountain and Courage of Sarah Nobel are great chapter books to start with when they are ready to move on to harder books. We also like the “I Can Read” books. We use McGuffey Readers for phonics instruction, but my DC love re-reading the lessons on their own as well…you can find these on Gutenberg.org.

I’ve used and loved most of the suggestions already listed. My newly reading son loves the Elephant & Piggie books by Mo Willems. He also really likes the Pigeon books but those are a bit harder. We use this list a lot as well – Dr. Suess Leveled Readers.

Thanks guys or the suggestions! I definitely want to keep his enthusiasm high and keep him interested! We love the pathway readers and bob books but they are almost just for lessons. Want to find him books he can enjoy on his own! Gonna look into the books you all suggested!
