Alright all you book loving ladies. My 6.5 year old daughter is fluently reading. We are past the Frog and Toad, Little Bear, and Amelia Bedelia stage.
Mage started her first chapter book today, a Magic Tree House one. Not the greatest quality but she was so excited. She sat and read 7 chapters very quickly. I was worried she had skipped pages so I sat down and skimmed it and kind of quizzed her and she understood what she had read.
What are some other early Chapter books? She get intimidated my really small font/ no pictures but is ok with more that 10 words a page.
I searched previous posts but most seem to be the frog and toad type books or harder than I’m looking for.

There are some Little House chapter books, not the original books. My daughter has dyslexia and has just recently begun reading a little more independently, but she is able to read these books. They are shortened versions of the originals.

The My Father’s Dragon trilogy were the first chapter books for my two oldest kids. My oldest read it on his own, with my second he and I alternated pages because he’s a reluctant reader.

Elva Hurst wrote some really nice stories about when she was young — they are chapter books, have large print, very few illustrations. There are also some recipes at the end, which thrill my girls. My 7yo really likes these books. The series is called “Farm Life Series” and if you search for Elva Hurst on Amazon, you’ll find them.

After Frog and Toad and Little Bear, my kiddo really enjoyed these books as a next step (I tried to list these from easiest to harder but it’s probably not perfect):
– A Toad for Tuesday, by Russell Erickson
– The Bears on Hemlock Mountain, by Alice Dalgliesh
– The Hundred Dresses, by Eleanor Estes
– Courage of Sarah Noble, by Alice Dalgliesh
– A Lion to Guard U, Shoeshine Girl, or others by Clyde Robert Bulla
– The Boxcar Children (just the first one) by Gertrude Chandler Warner

Oh, I forgot about Clyde Bulla! My 7yo daughter is really enjoying The Sword in the Tree……she’s reading it as part of our Module 3 (Middle Ages/Ren/Ref) history.

Thanks ladies. It’s hard because I want to avoid books that will be asigned reading for school in coming years but also don’t want her to miss them now.

I don’t think I’d worry too much about staying away from books she’ll eventually have to read for history. It depends on the child. I have one daughter who doesn’t like to read a book again and another girl who loves reading books again…….so, depending on your child, it might be okay to let her read something now and then again in a year or two.
