My 7 y/o is about to finish the 2nd grade Pathway books. For leisure reading I picked up Nate the Great books. They are quite simple for him, but I figured I would start with something below his reading level to get him interested in reading on his own. He is reading the last one our library has available – he has read the rest voraciously. I asked the librarian for some book suggestions, but I am wondering how twaddly they are. I know Nate the Great could be considered twaddle to some degree. I just want to feed him books that will increase his desire to read but not be overly silly. The librarian suggested: Magic Treehouse, A to Z Mysteries, Encyclopedia Brown, The Shoebox Kids, and Cam Jansen. If there are any books including ghosts and such I won’t let him read it. I would love your input as well as some suggestions for books that would be great early chapter books.

Encyclopedia Brown is good. We’ve enjoyed Thornton Burgess’ chapter books and Dick King Smith’s.

My kids have read Nate the Great, A-Z (uses stupid and what the heck though; we skipped some due to topics like vampires, etc.), and Cam Jansen, which I really liked. How about books by Clyde Robert Bulla? Some are on the Sonlight readers list here that we follow: http://www.sonlight.com/readers-2.html or http://www.sonlight.com/readers-3.html. Maybe The Boxcar Children series. Beware that Magic Tree house has a wizard and spells. I would not let my kids read them. As an alternative, we have the Imagination Station books.

Anything by clyde Robert Bulla, the first 19 Boxcar Children, the Francis Tucket series by Gary Paulsen, the Sugar Creek. Gang series by Paul Hutchins.

It was a challenge for me to find books for my son at that age! He liked Imagination Station and Time Warp Trio books along with some of the others mentioned above.
