DS4/5 Potty Training

My DS turns 5 a week from Monday. He is potty trained but has phases where he holds it until he just can’t anymore. That causes *a little* (and sometimes a lot) to come out an him to run full blazes to the bathroom. I can tell when he is holding it because he gets rambunctious. However I can’t simply look for these signs and make him go. He has actually sat on the potty and held it. You can lead a horse to water but can’t make him drink sort of thing. Any suggestions on how to get him to stop waiting until the last minute (and beyond) before going?

My 4.5 yo dd just recently started not going to the bathroom until almost too late, and she dribbles pee a bit because of it. I think playtime and life in general is too exciting for her to want to stop and pee, lol. I have started to make her try to go every 2-3 hours even if she says she doesn’t have to. I told her this is to get her past waiting too long to go, and hope to not have to remind her to go regularly in the near future.
