Do you have any dress up ideas for boys? For my 4 1/2 year old, we have a firefighter jacket & hat; some playsilks; a train engineer hat; and that’s about it. Any other inexpensive ideas for dress up? Stuff I could find at a thrift store or laying around the house?

My son likes to dress up as a knight. I made him my own version using various sizes of tin pie plates. I think I found more detailed descriptions on the internet. Martha Stewart has some cute ideas for costumes on her kids website. I also made him a spider costume ( we acted out the Miss Muppet rhyme;he was the spider) using mens dress socks stuffed with tissue or rags and sewn onto black shirt and black leggings. He was quite happy with it. You could probably find a cowboy type hat at a dollar store or thrift store and a bandanna made out of a handkerchief you could make a little vest out of felt yourself or find one easily enough at a thrift store as well. I know this isn’t really the time of year for this, but I have bought Halloween costumes (the non-scary and gross kind) the day after Halloween for cheap. We have a dr. outfit, police outfit, and a cowboy from that. We have also gotten inexpensive cowboy hats at Wal-Mart/Bass Pro that my 3 boys love to wear. We also have reindeer antlers from the $1 isle at Christmas that they pretend to be deer with. They too are fans of the firefighter – I don’t know if you have a Firehouse subs nearby but they give away free hats – we have lots. We have a knight set that was a bday present from Target for around $20 I think. And we have the Davy Crockett hats (which my two year olds are afraid of). They also like to put on their orange toboggans and a camo shirt and pretend to hunt like Daddy. The little two like to just wear their older brother’s clothes and pretend to be him! 🙂 There is always the paper sack vest that can be decorated any way you need it to be. Overalls and a tool belt and they are construction workers. We also have small aprons and chef hats (I got the hats at a kitchen store for cheap, the aprons are give-aways, but can easily be made) and they like to cook. That’s all I can think of right now that is in the dressup box. As for my boys, they are usually content with a hat or one piece of an outfit and they are instantly someone else!

There’s always some of your dh’s old shirts, ties, etc. Or he could be a farmer with a straw hat or cap with a bill (my father always wore caps, not straw hats). I think I’ve seen inexpensive police/wild west sheriff badges at dollar stores. Of course, there are doctor’s kits, too. He would need one of your dh’s shirts to use as his lab coat, but I think the kit would have a stethoscope and other “medical” stuff.

oh yes that reminded me – Burger King crowns, another free dress-up (we have made the paper ones too), also the Krispy Kreme doughnut hats get used as chef hats around here. I promise we really don’t eat out as much as it sounds like we do 🙂

A stick pony is a great addition to the dress up box for boys or girls – a great accessory.

We make capes out of old blankets, sheets or adult t-shirts to go with the Crowns. You can easily make your own crown and have them decorate it from cardstock.
