Do you use them? Like them? Are they too detailed for a first grader? Do you let them color the actual page or photocopy the pages you want so you can use them for multiple kids? Is there anything like this in a pdf downloadable format?
There are about a dozen that *I* would like to buy but don’t know if I really need them. Well, obviously I don’t need them but they look fun. 🙂

My just turned 7yo son is very artistic and loves detail – he loves the Dover books. My two 5yos are not and would be overwhelmed with the detail in them – I think it really depends on the child. I am not certain on the copyright, but I believe I have copied a few pages before so they could be a part of his notebook with other things he’s done and keep everything in one place. But the one I got for Ancient Greece I am going to just hand over to him, it was only $3 so if the other two show interest in something like that I’ll get them their own later on. I haven’t seen a pdf format, but I’d be interested if there were!

If you get on their mailing list, they frequently send out coupons like “$20 off a $40 purchase” My kids have always loved these coloring books. Some are less detailed than others, so those would be good for younger kids.

My kids (7,6,4 & 2) all love them. I think even the ones that are technically too young appreciate getting to color in the “special” coloring books, they just don’t seem too concerned about perfection and each color according to their ability even down to the two year old who basically scribbles :o)
I love that I can find a book on almost any topic/time period to reinforce what we are studying. I think I love them also because they are not “twaddle” like so many coloring books…..come to think of it I think that is probable why even my very young ones enjoy getting to draw in them, they don’t talk down to them but encourage them to participate in the family learning at their level.

We use them often and I allow my kids to make copies. My kids have loved them since they were about 3 or 4 years old. There was a discussion awhile back about if it was a violation of copyright to make copies for your family, can’t remember if it was here or on a group that I’m part of. One of the moms wrote to the company to ask and the response was that it was not a violation of copyright to make copies for your own personal use.
My older kids love to use tracing paper to trace them.

Another possibility is Bellerophan Coloring Books and I know I’ve bought some with simpler line drawings that were good for younger kids. I forget the name, but I think I bought them from Hands and Hearts.
