We have also used k9 for many years. It is the best we have seen among free and pay services. We also use open dns for an extra measure of protection. Both are highly recommended here. We have the k9 safe search enabled. Kids go to google and it forces the safe search. It is not perfect, I am sure, but we have not had any problems with the desktop or laptop. Now phones and tablets are a different story. We have yet to find satisfactory filtering so we use Applock to lock browsers.

I’ve been pretty happy with Covenant Eyes. I like that you can choose filtering, accountability, or both. For older children or adults you can choose to only use the accountability features, which sends you a report of sites visited with flags for possible problem sites. That way you can work with your children as partners in helping them make good choices, and they know that monitoring is happening as part of the accountability.

Very interesting thread and I hope to find a great fit for my family as my children are getting older. I have nothing in place right now, but our safety is that I bookmark safe sites and kids know that they can go to their bookmarks anytime, but not search for anything and right now they have not broken the rules. I can see the montior at all times and I also check the history usually daily, but I know as they get older the temptation will get stronger and  their need to look things up on their own is natural. Thanks for all the input ladies.

A clever kid will know he can easily remove history or use the privacy mode in most browsers to leave no history. Something to consider if you’re not always watching.

Thanks so much for the updates, reports and input. I’ll look these up and hopefully come up with something for us to use soon.  I wish it were easier to keep our kids safe.  The internet is one of those wonderful resources with an awful curse attached to it.
